Abstract

Introduction: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a disabling condition that may lead to significant physical, emotional, and social consequences, with pressure injuries (PI) being one of its most frequent complications. Although the literature extensively addresses clinical and preventive aspects, studies focusing on the perspectives of individuals living with both SCI and PI remain limited. Objective: To assess the perceptions of individuals with spinal cord injury and pressure injuries regarding their health condition, emphasizing their expectations about treatment. Methodology: This qualitative, cross-sectional, and descriptive-analytical study was conducted with 15 adults diagnosed with SCI (AIS A or B) and pressure injuries, receiving care at a specialized rehabilitation center. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The sample size was determined based on the criterion of theoretical saturation. Data analysis followed Bardin’s content analysis. The study was conducted and reported in accordance with the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ). Results: Five thematic categories emerged: feelings experienced after spinal cord injury; feelings following the onset of pressure injuries; living with pressure injuries; perceptions and expectations regarding treatment; and changes in daily life resulting from SCI and PI diagnoses. The findings revealed substantial impacts on the emotional, social, and functional dimensions of participants’ lives. Conclusion: Living with spinal cord injury and pressure injuries goes beyond biological impairment, highlighting the need for comprehensive and person-centered care approaches. The results underscore the relevance of multiprofessional practices, health education, self-care promotion, and public policies aimed at accessibility, continuity of care, and social inclusion.
