Abstract

Introduction: Suicide represents a serious public health issue, accounting for over 700,000 deaths per year worldwide. Objective: Describe the main epidemiological characteristics of suicide attempts and deaths in Brazil. Method: This is an ecological study conducted using secondary data on suicide deaths and self-inflicted injuries in Brazil from 2015 to 2022. Results: There were 107,155 deaths by suicide recorded, with the highest incidence in the year 2022, in the Southeast region, among white men aged 30 to 39 with 8 to 11 years of schooling. The most common method was hanging at home. As for self-inflicted injuries, there were 152,667 occurrences, with the highest incidence in 2022 and in the Southeast region, but among women aged 20 to 29, with completed high school education, single, primarily using poisoning at home. Conclusion: The main characteristics of suicide and self-harm cases in the country were highlighted, reaffirming the essential need for developing health promotion strategies and conducting more in-depth studies.
