Abstract

Introduction: Epidemiological studies on diseases have been increasingly used as a basis for decision-making in the context of public health. When it comes to the pediatric population, pneumonia is one of the main causes of hospitalization and deaths in the world, making it necessary to understand the epidemiological profile of newborns, infants, children and adolescents who die from this condition. Objective: To analyze the epidemiological profile of the pediatric population that dies from pneumonia in Minas Gerais from 2018 to 2022. Methodology: Ecological, descriptive study, with retrospective data analysis from the perspective of the SUS, using DATASUS and the Tabnet platform to obtain data from the Hospital Information System (SIH). Results: The highest absolute number of deaths from pneumonia in the pediatric population in the location and period analyzed occurred in 2022, while the mortality rate in the population aged 15 to 19 was higher in 2021. Considering the percentage distribution of deaths by gender, there was a predominance of deaths in males from 2018 to 2021 and among the races, the mixed race was the one with the highest annual average of deaths. Conclusion: Most deaths from pneumonia in the pediatric population occurred in males and mixed race people during the period and location evaluated. This must be taken into account for the implementation of targeted and effective collective health measures.
