Abstract

Peripheral arterial obstructive disease (PAOD) is characterized by a reduction or complete obstruction of vessels, altering the distribution of blood flow in the body. As one of its results, occlusive disease can appear in extremities and organs, favoring ischemic and cardiac changes, amputations and even death. This is a cross-sectional study that demonstrates risk factors, systemic repercussions and treatment of PAD with its epidemiological impact of prevalence in the country. Data were obtained from the Ministry of Health website (DATASUS), through TABNET, as well as the Demographic Census. Concomitantly, a literature review was carried out in electronic databases such as Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LiLACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and Google Scholar, using the descriptors: peripheral arterial disease, atherosclerosis and chronic critical limb ischemia. In the case of the country's public health system, PAD is a major cause of costs, with an increase of 37% (US$ 18.2–24.9 million) in the period from 2008 to 2012. The great epidemiological impact of this condition with increased prevalence and costs also in 2023, with modifiable factors being correlated as important causes of these findings. Therefore, it is essential that measures to combat such risk factors are implemented in the country. Likewise, it became clear that access to health services is deficient in several regions, demonstrating that this point needs to be improved through public policies and better applicability of the principle of universality of the SUS.
