Abstract

Introduction: Pulmonary Embolism (PE) is a common cardiopulmonary disease in the emergency department, with a high mortality potential due to the need for immediate diagnosis and treatment. Physiotherapy treatment is a relevant component in the management of this condition. Objective: To review the literature on current physiotherapy interventions for the treatment of patients with PE. Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted on scientific articles published in the last five years (2018 to 2023), collected from the following databases: National Library of Medicine (PubMed/MEDLINE), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), and PEDro (Physiotherapy Evidence Database), using the Health Science Descriptors (DeCS): pulmonary embolism, rehabilitation, and physiotherapy. Results: Five articles were eligible, and the main interventions found were: resistance training, respiratory exercises, flexibility exercises, and health promotion guidance. Conclusion: Overall, the main physiotherapeutic intervention for patients with PE is the implementation of supervised and individualized pulmonary rehabilitation programs.
