Abstract

Introduction: In rehabilitation, emotions are triggered when patients face the biological, psychological, and social changes resulting from illness. However, there is a noticeable distance among healthcare professionals regarding the emotional issues of patients. Objective: To investigate professional actions of a multidisciplinary team in response to emotional demands of patients hospitalized in a rehabilitation hospital in Goiânia. Method: A qualitative and descriptive research was conducted, using a semi-structured interview as the instrument with 17 professionals who worked at the rehabilitation unit of the hospital. Results and Discussion: Through Content Analysis, six thematic categories were identified: health concepts, emotional demands of patients, professional actions, professional action of the psychologist, emotional demands of professionals, and emotional interferences in their professional performance. It was observed that the majority of participants included psychological/emotional aspects in the concept of health. 47% of participants demonstrated difficulty in self-perceiving emotions in the work environment, indicating emotional interference in their professional actions. Conclusion: The research showed that professionals were able to relate illness to patients' emotions, with some of them directly engaging with these emotions, making mental health care for professionals essential.
