Abstract

The concept of infant mortality is defined as a social indicator, where deaths occurring in children who died before their first birthday are counted for every 1000 live births over a one-year period. These deaths show a deficiency in the maternal and child care provided by health units. Objective: To list the main causes of infant mortality in the state of Goiás in 2021. Methods: This was an observational, cross-sectional and descriptive study using the SIM and SINASC public databases. Results: Perinatal conditions and congenital malformations, deformities and chromosomal anomalies account for the largest number of causes of death by component; in relation to the percentage of causes of death by component, maternal factors, prematurity, other causes, congenital anomalies and perinatal infections are among the main causes; with regard to the proportion of infant deaths by component, preventable causes stand out among the age groups studied and with regard to the descriptions of the preventable causes of death, those that can be reduced by adequate care for women's health during pregnancy, the health of the newborn and women's health during childbirth are classified as the main causes. Conclusion: This establishes the need to create new public policies and improve access to healthcare for all, in order to remedy the deficiencies presented and further reduce the number of deaths.
