Abstract
Introduction: Syphilis is an infection caused by Treponema pallidum, being transmitted sexually, congenitally, through blood transfusions or through organ transplants. Objective: This study aimed to perform an integrative literature review on the impact of syphilis in pregnant women on public health, emphasizing the main methods of diagnosis, treatment and outcomes for mother and baby. Method: This is an integrative review, with selection of studies in the databases: Biblioteca virtual em saúde (BVS), PubMed (National Center Biotechnology Information) and Scielo, through the descriptors in Ciências da saúde (DeCS): gestational syphilis, congenital syphilis and infectious complications in pregnancy in portuguese and english languages, from 2018 to 2022. Results: Twenty-one scientific articles were selected, which met the inclusion criteria. Conclusion: It is seen as central problematic the restricted knowledge of pregnant women, the reinfection of the untreated sexual partner and the lack of knowledge of health professionals when diagnosing and stablish the treatment protocol. It is evident how treatment and diagnosis are still fragile and cause intense setbacks for public health in Brazil.
