Abstract

Introduction: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is considered a structural and/or functional alteration of the kidneys that contribute to the reduction of the glomerular filtration rate. In Brazil, arterial hypertension remains the main underlying disease of CKD, followed by diabetes mellitus (DM). It is admitted that patients with CKD may present changes in systems and structures that are related to swallowing, due to changes caused by treatment or the lack of it. Objective: To describe the dysphagia prevalence in chronic kidney disease patients on hemodialysis who live with diabetes and to verify associated factors. Method: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, quantitative study, with the result of the application of the Gugging Swallowing Screen (GUSS) protocol in individuals with chronic kidney disease and diabetes undergoing hemodialysis treatment, admitted to the Hospital Estadual Dr. Alberto Rassi (HGG). Results: 26 individuals participated in the study. The median age observed in this sample was 62 (IQR:57-67) years with a higher frequency of males 73% (n=19). In swallowing tests, participants had great difficulty in swallowing with solid consistency, in which 61.54% (n=16) had delayed swallowing and 34.62% (n=9) had involuntary coughing during ingestion. In the GUSS protocol, the average score was 19 (IQR: 18-20) points, which means a slight dysphagia in individuals with low risk of bronchoaspiration. Conclusion: Patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis treatment who live with diabetes had a low frequency of dysphagia with minimal risk of bronchoaspiration, using the GUSS protocol.
