Abstract

he definition of amputation comprises the total or partial separation of a limb from the rest of the body, with the purpose of providing relief from pain or avoiding death. Despite being something that occurs in the physical body and of a reconstructive nature, it can also generate psychic impacts on those who experience it. The objective of this work was to carry out a qualitative research about how people who suffered lower limb amputations deal with the process of body change and the experience of mourning, with the aim of contributing to the construction of knowledge in this area of ​​activity and reflecting on the importance of qualified psychological care. The study was carried out through an intentional sampling, composed of six participants, who underwent amputation of lower limbs, admitted to an emergency hospital. For this, two semi-structured interviews were carried out, used in two moments: after clinical indication of amputation and postoperative of limb removal, and subsequently analyzed using the content analysis technique. Through the study carried out, it was concluded that the psychological follow-up in this scenario aims to manage the psychological impact that the loss of a limb can cause in the patient's life, helping to build a new body image, thus allowing the subject to deal with the resulting emotional repercussions.
