DEVELOPMENT OF A LOW-COST SIMULATOR FOR TRAINING IN ULTRASOUND-GUIDED CENTRAL VENOUS PUNCTURE: AN EXPERIENCE REPORT

Abstract

Introduction: Medical education requires technical proficiency in invasive procedures, such as ultrasound-guided central venous catheterization. Commercial simulators can enhance training safety; however, their cost may limit their availability in public institutions. Objective: To describe the development and initial application of a central venous access simulator made from low-cost, easily reproducible materials for teaching and training in ultrasound-guided puncture. Methods: This is a descriptive technical experience report on the construction of a simulator using ballistic gelatin, tubular latex tourniquets, and artificial fluid, as well as its use in training sessions conducted between April and July 2025. Twelve simulators were produced, and six training sessions were held with 22 participants: six intensive care unit physicians, four internal medicine residents, and 12 fifth- and sixth-year medical students. Results: Twelve simulators were produced. The total cost of producing the 12 simulators was BRL 222.56, at an approximate cost of BRL

18.55 per simulator. During the training sessions, the latex tubes were identified using ultrasound, and the system allowed visualization of artificial fluid return after puncture, based on the authors’ direct observation. No formal instruments were used to assess participant satisfaction, self-confidence, or performance. Conclusion: The experience

demonstrated the technical feasibility of constructing and initially applying the simulator in the described context. The absence of standardized participant assessment precluded conclusions regarding its educational effectiveness or the acquisition of competencies.
