Abstract

Abstract: Objectives: To investigate sleep quality and the presence of excessive daytime sleepiness in firefighters. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional and quantitative study carried out in 2023 with 56 military firefighters from the city of Anápolis-Goiás, Brazil. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to assess sleep quality, while the Epworth Sleepiness Scale was used to analyze excessive daytime sleepiness. Results: The majority of the firefighters were male (96.4%), with an average age of 42.7 years, squares (75.0%) and worked shifts of 24 by 72 hours of rest. The quality of sleep assessed indicated that the majority of firefighters had sleep disorders (78.6%), with night-time waking being the problem that most interfered with sleep. As for daytime sleepiness, the majority had a normal pattern (62.5%), while a significant proportion had excessive sleepiness (37.5%). Conclusions: The long working hours of military firefighters lead to circadian rhythm deregulation and sleep disorders. Despite low levels of daytime sleepiness, poor sleep quality has a negative impact on the health of these professionals. This contributes to high levels of stress and anxiety, creating a harmful cycle.
