Abstract

Introduction: The Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological developmental alteration with increasing prevalence among children, negatively affecting their lives and those of their families. Objective: analyze how parental knowledge influences the use of information and health services for autistic children. Method: Qualitative study guided by Bardin's thematic content analysis. Results: Lack of knowledge constituted a critical barrier to health services. Feelings such as fear, frustration and limited social acceptance are also barriers to the use of health services. Conversely, facilitators for access include health education and psychological support for parents. The integrated model of knowledge and use of information on ASD in children demonstrated that the individual, family, and social dimensions, as well as socioeconomic, cultural and environmental factors interact. These elements impact parents' ability to access, understand, evaluate, and apply information about ASD. Conclusion: The findings of this study underline the need for multifaceted interventions that address not only the increase in knowledge and social acceptance but also offer continuous psychological support to parents.
